I finally found out how to use Hyper-V Manager in Windows 7

I installed the Windows 7 Beta a while back on my notebook and haven’t looked back since. I did so on a separate partition thus still being able to use my XP Pro on the other partition, but I must admit that I’ve only booted up the Previous Windows Version(that’s what it says on the boot up screen) a handful of times. What I’m trying to say is that that over the last few weeks I’ve become a fan of Windows 7. It feels a lot faster and more intuitive than XP and I’m sure the same goes for Vista as well (I’ve never actually used Vista as I’d never gotten around to it).

One of the things that I was really excited about, after having initially completed the installation, was being able to use Hyper-V Manager to manage my Microsoft Hyper-V Server installation (I’ll get into more details some other time). Since I obviously don’t have SCVMM I wanted to use the Hyper-V Management Tools (MMC snap-in its UI) that were released for Vista SP1, while they allow you to manage and interact with an installation of Hyper-V from your Vista computer in exactly the same manner that you do on a full installation of Windows Server 2008.

Therefore, I was sorely disappointed to find out that it wouldn’t let me install it on Windows 7 once I’d downloaded it.

The update is not applicable to your computer.

Luckily, I found out that I could use them by downloading the Server Administration Tools for Windows 7 (which I’d already done). So, I’d come a long way. But it still wasn’t clear to me how I could enable them. A little search revealed that it was (almost) as easy as baking a pie.
