Restaurant Week
Restaurant Week is on the horizon again and I just finished booking two restaurants – one for lunch and one for dinner. Since I’ve got an American Express card I’m allowed to book them a week earlier than most other people, but judging from the amount of restaurants already full (most of them being Michelin star ones) I’m not the only foodie with one of those in their wallet.
I wasn’t interested in Michelin star restaurants per se, as I’ve got two lined up later in the year (not for €25/€35 per person though!). So I booked ‘t Tolhuysch in Oegstgeest (while I’ve heard good stories about it and it’s nearby) and Maxime in the Hague (for it being Calla’s more laid back and hip sister). Should be a fun week.
Missing Andalusia
Today, when I came home from work, there was a surprise waiting for me: Chambao’s latest album Con Otro Aire.
Listening to it makes me want to go back to Spain: drink unas cañas con los amigos and eat some tapitas. Aaah, the good life.

The next president of the United States
In two days time it will finally happen. The new Messiah will be officially inaugurated. Callie Shell followed Barack Obama for much of the years running up to his presidency and captured some excellent photographs (along with a few anecdotes). Nice manhole covers
My friend Gijs is currently on tour in Japan, promoting the new Wouter Hamel album Nobody’s Tune.
I’m sure he’s having a good time (they went there last year as well and had a blast). I’ve always wanted to go to Japan, I find it such a fascinating country. Even their manhole covers are much funkier than anywhere else I’ve seen. My friend Martijn once took a bunch of photos of different manhole covers in NYC (but I cannot seem to find his blog post) and they were not even half as funky. Nor are they here in Leiden I might add (via).
Recession? Let’s spend!
I was digging through some old bookmarks and came across this British Royal Mint’s page and the winning design for the new GBP.
It was a while back when I saw the design originally and am wondering whether these new coins have actually already gone into circulation? With the British economy in a slight slum it might induce the Brits to increase their spending. I’m actually thinking about helping them a little, with exchange rate being very favourable at the moment and all. Not to mention the fact that it’s been absolutely ages since I went to the UK.
The Truth About Food
I still had some stuff on my hard disk recorder waiting for me to watch, so, since I arrived home relatively early from work today, I decided to watch two episodes of the The Truth About Food. I’d already watched a few a while back and thought they were quite interesting (BBC quality). As were these – it gave me some new insights into my diet.
MacBook Wheel
Apple’s latest. Everything is just a few hundred clicks away.
Instead of what, a few keystrokes? What a load of crock. And what about this one: [...] spent forty five minutes typing [sic] an email.
Forty five minutes? I can’t believe people are actually wanting to buying this crap. I actually thought this was some kind of hoax or an April Fools’ Day trick, but since it’s only January that can’t be the case.
